In this episode of The Articulate Fly, host Marvin Cash catches up with Brendan Ruch for another Ruch Report. Brendan shares his observations on the current fall transition, including cooler temperatures and wetter conditions. He discusses the challenges and rewards of fishing in low water levels, where every cast can either be grass or bass. Brendan provides tips on bottom bouncing techniques and how to fish in grassy conditions without losing your mind.
Listeners will appreciate Brendan's insights on fishing with both fly and spinning rods. He also shares his thoughts on the impact of music on fishing and recounts a successful day on the water with some chill country tunes.
Marvin and Brendan also dive into a fun Q&A session, where Brendan reveals his favorite on-boat snack of dried pineapple and pecans and his go-to post-fishing meal. They wrap up the episode with a reminder for listeners to send in their questions for a chance to win Articulate Fly swag and be entered into a drawing for cool prizes from Brendan.

Marvin: Hey, folks, it's Marvin Cash, the host of the Articulate Fly,
Marvin: and we're back with another Roosh Report with the man himself,
Marvin: Brendan Roosh. Brendan, how are you?
Brendan : I'm doing well. I can't believe it's already been two weeks since our last report.
Marvin: It's been two weeks and a day. I let you play hooky to go see the Phillies.
Brendan : Yeah, pulled out a wing. It was a great day to be at. I'm lucky to have a brother who can support me.
Marvin: And doesn't hate you. It's all good.
Brendan : Yeah.
Marvin: So, you know, it's interesting. I was looking at your weather before we started
Marvin: recording, and you guys being a little bit north of me, seems like you're kind
Marvin: of a little bit more into that fall transition, a little bit wetter,
Marvin: a little bit cooler. What are you seeing on the water?
Brendan : Yeah, the forecast is looking kind of wet and kind of cool.
Brendan : I still wish we would just get a big dump of rain, blow everything out,
Brendan : and just give us some water.
Brendan : But yeah, I mean, at least we're going to be getting a little bit of water in the systems.
Brendan : The last week was very low.
Brendan : Depending on where you were, there could have been lots of grass,
Brendan : but every cast was either grass or a bass. So fish have been very willing to eat.
Brendan : Getting them on bait fish flies, fishing some dead drifted, weighted crayfish
Brendan : stuff, or even just like modified bugger stuff.
Brendan : Um, but for those who are, you know, willing to throw a spinning rod,
Brendan : like you have a hundred fish days, letting, letting something hit the bottom,
Brendan : as long as it's under three inches long and green pumpkin.
Marvin: Yeah, there you go. Just bottom bouncing stuff, right?
Brendan : Yep. Yeah. My, my thumb is almost recovered, uh, from, from a couple of days
Brendan : ago. It was just a sleigh fist.
Marvin: Yeah. It's good to have those every now and again. And so, you know,
Marvin: in terms of, you know, particularly when you're fishing at various places in
Marvin: the water column and you've got crap in the water, which happens,
Marvin: you know, with Dustin, who's out in Wyoming on the North Platte,
Marvin: you know, what are some tips for folks that want to kind of,
Marvin: you know, fish in the grass and not lose their minds? Yeah.
Brendan : Well, if you're going to be fishing, like bringing a fly back to the boat,
Brendan : you're going to get grass way too often and you're most likely going to lose your mind.
Brendan : So one of the big reasons why we were bottom bouncing, like some clients come
Brendan : out and they just want to spin fish and some clients are just open to it.
Brendan : It so uh you know fishing parallel
Brendan : to the boat dead drifting almost nipping per se with like a bottom bouncing
Brendan : bay whether it's a net rig or a tube or uh some other soft plastic you're not
Brendan : going to pick up grass nearly as often as bringing something back to the boat that makes sense,
Brendan : so that that lure is just getting down and then
Brendan : bouncing in a line and then when you reel it in you're going to get grass every
Brendan : time just at the end of your retrieve so you pick that grass off cast it back
Brendan : out um but honestly most of the time you before you're done your your drift
Brendan : you're going to catch a fish whether it's five inches long or 19 you know yeah.
Marvin: Got it and i guess you know is with the water being low are you able to if you're
Marvin: uh you know fishing the fly to basically use a slap to get all the crap off
Marvin: of your fly or do you actually have to bring it all the way in and kind of clean
Marvin: it off to keep from scaring the bejesus out of the fish.
Brendan : I'm not a huge fan of flapping, mostly because the eelgrass will usually come
Brendan : off with the first false cast if you stop it hard enough.
Brendan : Or if you're not capable of doing that, I'm more than happy to take it off the hook.
Brendan : We've been dealing with a little bit of an algae bloom on one of the rivers,
Brendan : and that stuff's kind of like snotty hair.
Brendan : Uh so that i've been you know having to take off for people or they're taking it off,
Brendan : but uh yeah not a huge fan of the slap when you can see down eight feet in the
Brendan : deepest hole on the float and uh bass are spooking off the boat turning 50 feet away yeah.
Marvin: You know because you got your uh you know your sonos on the boat rocking the
Marvin: uh the morrissey scares the hell out lot of them right.
Brendan : You know i had i had a really good day uh with slick whitman from housefly,
Brendan : uh and we were we were playing some very chill
Brendan : music some graham parsons some willie nelson uh that
Brendan : wasn't sean's choice he doesn't really know anything about music but uh our
Brendan : buddy adam naples had that uh that country vibe going but yeah we didn't scoop
Brendan : any fish on that we actually the biggest fish of the week that day but um yeah
Brendan : i still don't think a mild volume speaker will scoop fish but others will disagree with me yeah.
Marvin: Well you know if you put that powered subwoofer in the bow um you know that's
Marvin: a problem um but uh you know it's funny.
Brendan : Yeah we've been up to your other boys in michigan yeah.
Marvin: Exactly the um you know just you know
Marvin: run it off the trolling motor it's all good um the
Marvin: uh you know it's funny uh all of your your fishing buddies uh they have a hard
Marvin: time coming up with serious questions i think i told you before we started recording
Marvin: i probably had a dozen kind of silly non-serious questions and the one we landed
Marvin: on is uh from cory rubin and he wanted to get your thoughts on your favorite
Marvin: post-day meal and your favorite on-boat snack.
Brendan : So favorite on boat snack, uh, just kind of happened to grab a fistful of dried
Brendan : pineapple and a fistful of, uh,
Brendan : the cons out of Chris Willen boat back in June.
Brendan : And they were kind of got mixed together in my left hand as he's motoring around.
Brendan : And I think that's my new favorite snack.
Brendan : Um, so I've been mixing them together when I can justify spending like $20 on
Brendan : a boat it's not but yeah the dried pineapple and pecans that's my new favorite thing,
Brendan : beef jerky is always good I find it hard to swallow that pill also as far as
Brendan : like paying for it but my two thing is just ground mix,
Brendan : and yeah post meal post fishing meal I don't know,
Brendan : Most of the time, it's Chipotle, but I prefer steak for sure.
Marvin: There you go. It's kind of funny because I hear you talking about all this health food stuff.
Marvin: I see you undercover wearing Birkenstocks and some kind of macrame poncho at
Marvin: the local health food store.
Marvin: Buying twigs and berries and bulk.
Brendan : Well, don't worry.
Brendan : I supplement all of this with a healthy dose of Reese's Cups.
Marvin: Yeah, there you go.
Brendan : Just to keep me at a nice pudgy level.
Marvin: There you go. You don't want to get to fighting weight too soon.
Marvin: So, you know, folks, we love questions on the Articulate Fly.
Marvin: You can email them to us or DM us on social media.
Marvin: And if we use your question, I will send you some Articulate Fly swag.
Marvin: And by the way, the burner accounts, they seem to like not want to send me their
Marvin: address, which is kind of funny.
Marvin: But I'll send you some Articulate Fly swag. And then we enter a drawing for
Marvin: a cool kind of swag bundle from Brendan that's got, you know,
Marvin: roof shangling stuff, house fly stuff, and log jam stuff.
Marvin: Stuff and uh you know like i always do brendan we're always looking forward
Marvin: um trying to help people find you to get in the boat uh you know what do you
Marvin: have open and how should people reach out uh.
Brendan : I've got some scattered days available in october um i'd love to do some some
Brendan : twin fly boats uh so yeah reach out on instagram at brendan roosh on facebook
Brendan : at brendan roosh and roosh angling.
Brendan : Yeah, we're kind of in the twilight of the 2024 bass season here,
Brendan : and it's going to switch over to muskie pretty surely.
Brendan : So, if you want to get out for a big fat fall, small mouth, now's the time to do it.
Marvin: Yeah, any parking lot tattoos, trash cleanups, anything like that you need to share with folks?
Brendan : No events on the horizon as far as I know.
Marvin: Well, there you go. Well, listen, folks, as I always say, yo it to yourself
Marvin: to get out there and catch a few. Tight lines, everybody. Tight lines, Brendan.
Brendan : Take care, everybody. Thanks for having me, Marvin.
Marvin: You bet.
