Speaker:

Marvin: Hey folks, it's Marvin Cash, the host of The Articulate Flower,

Speaker:

Marvin: back with another On the Water with Dustin White. Dustin, how are you?

Speaker:

Dustin: Marvin, I'm doing well. How are you, my friend?

Speaker:

Marvin: I'm trying to stay out of trouble and you're trying to smooth it over. Yeah.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, what folks don't know is you were out pulling for carp and you fell off the platform.

Speaker:

Marvin: And I'll let you take it from there about phone troubles at 18 inches of water

Speaker:

Marvin: and all that kind of good stuff.

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah had a had a client uh on

Speaker:

Dustin: the bow another that was uh under my

Speaker:

Dustin: pulling platform and the one that under the platform got really excited when

Speaker:

Dustin: i caught on a fish and uh jumped up uh boat to kind of shimmied and uh yeah

Speaker:

Dustin: took a tumble off the the platform and uh phone was in my pocket it and fell

Speaker:

Dustin: in some pretty shallow water on it.

Speaker:

Dustin: So the iPhone, the former iPhone 13 is no more.

Speaker:

Dustin: And so I had to do the obligatory upgrade, even though I wasn't expecting it.

Speaker:

Dustin: But we're all good. So a little bit of a pinch back, but everything's all good.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, I never knew that an iPhone could break your fall like that.

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah, it really, really helps.

Speaker:

Marvin: So you're going with the iPhone probably, what, 15 Pro or Pro Max?

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah, yeah. I've heard they have a little more cushion for them coming off that polling platform.

Speaker:

Dustin: So I decided to do the upgrade.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, well, they have an airbag in them now. It's kind of cool.

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah, exactly.

Speaker:

Marvin: So as we get ready to kind of cruise into the 4th of July weekend,

Speaker:

Marvin: you know, it's kind of funny. We're down here in the southeast.

Speaker:

Marvin: I was telling you it's roasting. Like we've had, we've had a cool day today,

Speaker:

Marvin: but it's going to bounce right back up to the upper nineties and you're sitting

Speaker:

Marvin: there highs in the upper seventies, low eighties. It's got to be pretty sweet.

Speaker:

Marvin: What are you seeing out on the water?

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah, it's been perfect temps. We're just so fortunate. It's such a pleasant time of year.

Speaker:

Dustin: In terms of bug life, you know, we've had our typical DMDs, caddis,

Speaker:

Dustin: yellow sallies, kind of across the board.

Speaker:

Dustin: Um our our golden stones on

Speaker:

Dustin: the mile are starting to pop so we're really really excited about

Speaker:

Dustin: that um it might even be you know

Speaker:

Dustin: popping by the time uh this this is published uh and podcast is out there for

Speaker:

Dustin: everybody so it's it's a any day now the golden stones on the mile are going

Speaker:

Dustin: to be popping so um probably some of the most you know exciting surf section

Speaker:

Dustin: that that folks uh can expect

Speaker:

Dustin: to see uh in this region of the country but um

Speaker:

Dustin: you know other than that you know um pmds like

Speaker:

Dustin: i said caddis uh tends to be the more

Speaker:

Dustin: favorable takes throughout the day uh later in

Speaker:

Dustin: the afternoon you know salaries are coming off and and folks can uh expect to

Speaker:

Dustin: see those uh being taken as well um but uh all in all pretty good on all fronts

Speaker:

Dustin: uh bighorn's pretty mossy um so you know just be aware of that you're gonna

Speaker:

Dustin: be casting lanes probably wouldn't nymph it probably would do.

Speaker:

Dustin: Some sort of dry dropper um you know

Speaker:

Dustin: first success there um they just dropped the flows of the reef on us so that's

Speaker:

Dustin: gonna you know consolidate this fish a little more central in the water column

Speaker:

Dustin: um but uh in in the later afternoon they're moving over into the shallow flats

Speaker:

Dustin: near the banks to to take tries.

Speaker:

Dustin: And like I said, on the mile front, it's any day now, as we're speaking,

Speaker:

Dustin: the golden stones are going to be popping.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah. And so how long does that hatch chain really last?

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah, I mean, it's about a four or five day hatch itself.

Speaker:

Dustin: But there's a latency period of another four or five days where the fish are

Speaker:

Dustin: willing to take flies on the surface.

Speaker:

Dustin: So, you know, it's kind of like a nine to 10 day window, I typically tell folks.

Speaker:

Dustin: And so, literally, it's any day now. We've got, you know, it's big tear in our system.

Speaker:

Dustin: So, you know, we've got them out, the adults are out, they're flat around.

Speaker:

Dustin: Around, just starting to.

Speaker:

Dustin: So probably in the next couple of days, we're going to see those fish start to key in on them.

Speaker:

Dustin: And then you've got another, you know, eight, nine, 10 days after that first

Speaker:

Dustin: sort of emergence starts to occur where those fish will take a golden on the surface.

Speaker:

Marvin: Very, very cool. And, you know, folks, we love questions on the Articulate Fly.

Speaker:

Marvin: You can email them to us or DM us on social media. And one thing we've added

Speaker:

Marvin: recently, if you go to the podcast link on the website, down in the lower right-hand

Speaker:

Marvin: corner, there's a little microphone. You can actually record your question.

Speaker:

Marvin: And if we use that question, we'll actually play it on the episode. So kind of a cool thing.

Speaker:

Marvin: And if we use your question, I'll send you some articulate fly swag and then

Speaker:

Marvin: bring you a drawing for a half a day of fishing with Dustin.

Speaker:

Marvin: And Dustin, as we always do, we've got to give

Speaker:

Marvin: a shout-out to a local bar-slash-restaurant-slash-drinking-astalagement.

Speaker:

Marvin: What's on the list this time around?

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah i gotta go to the the uh the local

Speaker:

Dustin: haunt of the silver fox silver fox is

Speaker:

Dustin: a historical uh steakhouse and bar here in casper wyoming um it's fantastic

Speaker:

Dustin: for us because it's you know mac dab right in the middle of our commute out

Speaker:

Dustin: from in town casper out to uh the crazy rainbow to your lodge, out to the Gray Reef.

Speaker:

Dustin: You pass it on your trek out to the water.

Speaker:

Dustin: And so it's such a great place.

Speaker:

Dustin: Fantastic steaks. Chiller bartender service. Everyone there is so fantastic.

Speaker:

Dustin: And the legendary bacon knots that still haunt my dreams, Marvin, are pretty fantastic.

Speaker:

Dustin: The Silver Fox is is such a cool spot and whenever we have guests in town and

Speaker:

Dustin: they ask, hey, where should I go to eat tonight?

Speaker:

Dustin: That's always one of the first recommendations we give to folks.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, sounds pretty neat. And so you gotta tell me a little bit more about the

Speaker:

Marvin: bacon knots, what makes them so special?

Speaker:

Dustin: There's probably some illicit substance wrapped in them, but they literally break bacon.

Speaker:

Dustin: And it's more like a dessert appetizer than it would be anything else.

Speaker:

Dustin: There's kind of a sweet, maple-y glaze on them. And yeah, just pretty addicting.

Speaker:

Dustin: So you can't stop with one. They're pretty fantastic.

Speaker:

Marvin: And you're saying the secret sauce is like ayahuasca or mescaline or something like that?

Speaker:

Dustin: Something like that. PCP, who knows? It's Angel Dust.

Speaker:

Dustin: I don't know, but whatever it is, it's fantastic.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, that's pretty old school there. I haven't heard anyone talk about Angel

Speaker:

Marvin: Dust in a while. Have you been watching like Old Hill Street Blues reruns or something?

Speaker:

Dustin: No no no

Speaker:

Dustin: uh but uh something's going on

Speaker:

Dustin: with these these bacon knots and they're they uh they definitely

Speaker:

Dustin: lend that way so um but yeah um anytime

Speaker:

Dustin: anyone's here in town uh they're right off cy avenue and uh silver fox the silver

Speaker:

Dustin: fox will take a real good care of you and yeah just a great local font and uh

Speaker:

Dustin: killer steaks killer walleye you know we got like a little uh crusted and walleye that they serve.

Speaker:

Dustin: So everything on the menu is incredible.

Speaker:

Dustin: The bar staff's great. We're really grateful to have them in town.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, so did they put the walleye on the menu to pay homage to your Midwest heritage?

Speaker:

Dustin: I like to think so. I'm not sure if that's the actual case, but in my head,

Speaker:

Dustin: that's definitely what I like to believe.

Speaker:

Marvin: Yeah, with the progies on the side, right?

Speaker:

Dustin: Exactly. A little sauerkraut. Yeah. Yeah. Perfect.

Speaker:

Marvin: So you're telling me you're kind of in that sweet groove where the great thing

Speaker:

Marvin: about you is, you know, you're guiding so many repeat clients.

Speaker:

Marvin: It's like kind of old friends week for the next few weeks. You want to let folks,

Speaker:

Marvin: you know, know where you hang your hat, shop hours, how to book you and all that kind of good stuff.

Speaker:

Dustin: Yeah, absolutely. Yep. I probably guide for the ugly bug and crazy rainbow.

Guide

Born and raised in Northeast Ohio, Dustin had a rod in his hand soon after he started walking. He spent much of his childhood and adolescence fishing for muskie, pike, and bass on his family’s lake property. Any and all family trips were spent on the water chasing numerous species of fish in both freshwater and saltwater. However, Dustin’s favorite form of angling has and will always be targeting Trout and Steelhead on the fly. Dustin spends his winters guiding for Steelhead on the tributaries of Lake Erie. Dustin is a graduate of Sweetwater Travel Guide School, and he is a proud pro-staff member of a number of the industry’s top manufacturers. He is also the cofounder and director of “Nimi on the Fly,” a nonprofit charity that seeks to promote character building, enrichment, and conservation with youth the sport of fly fishing.
